見詰める

みつめる【見詰める】

〔目前を〕 gaze 《at [on]…》; stare (hard) 《at…》; look hard [fixedly] 《at…》; look 《at sb》 with a fixed gaze [eye]; fix [fasten, rivet] one's eyes 《on…》; fix one's gaze [sight] 《on [upon]…》; keep one's eyes fixed 《upon…》; watch intently [closely]; 〔過去や未来を〕 gaze 《into the future, back over one's past》; 〔自己を〕 study 《oneself, one's motives》.

●鏡を見つめる stare into the mirror

・相手の顔を見つめる stare sb in the face; study sb's face

・将来を見つめる gaze into the future

・現実を見つめる fix one's eyes on reality

・自分自身を見つめ直す reflect on oneself.

●彼は立ち止まってその像をじっと見つめていた. He stood with his eyes riveted [glued] on the statue.

・そんなに見つめられたら何も言えません. I can't say a thing if everybody stares at me like that.

・少女は地面を見つめたまま顔を上げなかった. The girl kept her eyes on the ground and didn't look up.

・病床では死を見つめた日々だった. In my sickbed I spent day after day staring into the eyes of death.
